Landowners open bypass to trail users between Ralston and Marengo

OLYMPIA – Feb. 28, 2023 – Next month an eastern Washington section of the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail will become more contiguous, allowing trail users to avoid a 19-mile road detour between Ralston and Marengo.

The new Cow Creek Trestle Bypass will open seasonally from March 1 to Oct. 31, thanks to a mutual agreement between State Parks and private landowners, TDH Properties.

State Parks’ professional arbor crew blends science, technology and tree work for public safety and conservation.

“What is your earliest tree memory?” Washington State Parks Arborist Mik Miazio once asked visitors at Millersylvania.  

Most recalled climbing trees or eating fruit from neighboring orchards. Grandparents’ houses and childhood backyards were common themes.  

Trees and forest ecosystems are among Washington’s icons, and many nature lovers equate the outdoors with trees. 

Did you know Deception Pass was once covered in a massive glacier? Join staff for a hike to the summit of Goose Rock to explore how glaciers have shaped our park and the unique wildflowers that grow in this post-glacial ecosystem. This hike is a roughly 1-mile out and back with 380ft elevation gain. Surfaces include stairways and dirt trail. The hike is expected to take 1.5 hours with a 20-minute return hike back to the parking lot. This hike is not stroller accessible or ADA.

My oh, my! It’s been a busy fall, winter and spring at the Commanding Officer’s Quarters Museum. But before diving into recent developments, let’s rewind a bit. On January 1, 2024, Fort Worden State Park officially assumed operations of the museum from its previous steward, the Jefferson County Historical Society.

OLYMPIA – The Admiralty Head Lighthouse at Fort Casey Historical State Park will open later than usual, in mid-April, with an exciting update to its exhibits.

To visit a state park you will need a one-day or annual Discover Pass most days of the year. Depending on what kind of activity you are planning, you may also need a permit, reservation or to pay a fee.

In early April, construction began on a new roundabout at the intersection of State Route 7 and Mashel Prairie Road near Nisqually State Park. Work is anticipated for completion by September 2025, weather permitting.
