Washington state parks welcomes many types of volunteer groups. Volunteer groups consist of three or more persons that volunteer on either short or long-term projects. or events. Volunteer groups can consist of formal groups such as scouts, church groups Friends Groups and recreational organizations to local businesses that just want to come out and support their local park.

During the spring of 2025, Parks will work with contractors to complete a 340-acre forest health project in Riverside State Park in the area between Seven Mile Road and Carlson Road. This project will promote a healthy and resilient forest by removing wildfire fuels and low vigor trees. Trailhead and trail closures will be in place throughout the project area. 

Going for a hike allows you to connect with yourself, your fellow hikers and with the nature around you. Hiking in your state parks can take you through gripping switchbacks, to stunning views and around otherworldly geologic wonders. Whether you're looking for an extreme adventure or just a pretty stroll, your state parks are here to welcome you.

In April 2025, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission will begin a grant-funded project to build a new trailhead and expand parking access to the popular Knothead Loop Trail in Northwest Spokane. Construction has begun and will tentatively be completed by July. View a map of the work area here.

Alicia started as a volunteer at Deception Pass State Park with the Maintenance Crew. Not long after that, she became a park aide. Then, she found that she really loved intense physical labor, spacial problem solving, and operating more behind the scenes so, she pivoted and took on the role of Maintenance Mechanic.
