Harstine Island State Park is the perfect spot for hiking, swimming, birdwatching and fishing. Upland trails include a slight incline, while the beach trail drops about 150ft in elevation.
This park is a short drive away from Jarrell Cove State Park, offering campers and day visitors a delightful place to explore.
McMicken Island Marine State Park can be reached by foot from Harstine Island State Park. A Tombolo connects the two islands at low tide and creates a temporary trail for visitors to enjoy. It's not recommended to start your hike during an incoming tide.
Fun fact: a tombolo is a beach feature made of sand that connects two points. In this case, the tombolo connects Harstine Island with McMicken Island.
After parking in the main lot, walk to the beach and head south. The distance is approximately 1.65 miles to the beginning of the tombolo.
The tombolo is exposed at -1.0ft tide. Visitors should plan their arrival time to McMicken Island about one hour before low tide, or when the tide reads +2 feet. This provides enough time to explore the island. Plan to leave with the incoming tide, before the tombolo becomes inaccessible.
For any further questions regarding hiking to McMicken Island, please call Jarrell Cove State Park at (360) 426-9226.
