MONTESANO – Lake Sylvia State Park is closed while crews respond to impacts brought on by this week’s heavy rain.  The current atmospheric river weather event has raised lake levels and placed added stress on the Lake Sylvia dam. Celebrate the new year with Washington State Parks during our annual First Day Hikes events on Jan. 1, 2026.   More than 30 state parks across the state will host staff-led and self-guided hikes, snowshoe treks, trail rides, polar plunges, interpretive activities and more on New Year’s Day.   First Day Hikes vary in distance and difficulty, ranging from smooth, flat ADA-accessible trails to moderate hill climbs. OLYMPIA – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is seeking applications from winter sports enthusiasts for the agency’s snowmobile and non-motorized advisory committees. Seven positions are available statewide to snowmobilers, and four are available statewide to individuals involved in non-motorized winter sports. OLYMPIA – Washington’s state land management agencies have designated 12 Discover Pass free days for 2026, creating more opportunities for visitors to experience our state’s beauty.   On these free days, a Discover Pass is not required to park at Washington state parks or on lands managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. OLYMPIA — The inaugural nomination round for the Scenic Bikeways Program closes Nov. 30 – have you submitted your route? Washington State Parks is calling on organizations and individuals to submit bike routes they think should become Washington State’s first Scenic Bikeways. The pilot nomination round will advance up to 15 proposed routes for further consideration. State Parks will oversee the route nomination and implementation process.
