Join us for this fun two-day class to learn how to weave a 4 to 5-inch cedar bark basket with Melissa Peterson in the lower kitchen shelter at Tolmie State Park.

In this two-day class hosted at Tolmie State Park, you will weave a 4 to 5-inch basket with Melissa Peterson. The basket will be composed of natural and dyed cedar bark as well as raffia. Melissa Peterson is a Makah tribal member living on the Makah reservation and weaving Makah traditional & contemporary basket for over 50 years. Melissa collects and processes all of the materials used in her basketry. She has been a cultural arts specialist for 40 years, teaching multiple generations.

Makah Tribal Style Cedar Bark Basket

Students should bring a lunch, water bottle, and snacks (fridge, sink, and microwave available), and for the class should bring a small knife like a pocket knife, a pair of scissors, and a small basin for water. Course fee includes all other materials needed to complete the project.

This folk & traditional arts workshop is presented by the Washington State Parks Folk & Traditional Arts Program and Arbutus Folk School with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
