OLYMPIA – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, in partnership with Outdoors for All Foundation, is excited to launch a pilot program that offers an Action Trackchair for visitor use at Lake Sammamish State Park.

The Action Trackchair has a track similar to the back of a snowmobile. That means it can move over uneven terrain, allowing people who have mobility needs to access the hiking trails, picnic areas and ballfields at Lake Sammamish. The chair’s battery will run for around two hours and will signal when it’s low.

The chair will be housed in the Adaptive Cycling Center (ACC) at Sunset Beach until the cycling center closes for the season on Sept. 30. The ACC also houses a fleet of over 250 adaptive bike rentals for anyone ages seven and up.

The center is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the chair can be checked out on a first-come-first-served basis. Visitors can contact the ACC to make a reservation by calling 206-838-6030 ext. 291.

A companion must accompany the user to help them transition into and out of the chair if help is needed. Staff will not be available to assist with transfers. Users must sign liability waivers and leave their government-issued ID while using the chair.

This pilot program was made possible through a grant from the Bronco Wild Fund and a matching grant from the Washington State Parks Foundation. Parks is grateful to all of the organizations that have come together to improve accessibility in our park system.
