Mini Rangers (Deception Pass)

Join us for our first summer of Mini Ranger programs, inspired by our annual Family in Nature programs. As a group, explore Deception Pass State Park’s amazing wildlife and unique collection of forest and marine habitats.

We are excited to invite families with children 1 to 5-years-old to join staff for a fun and highly interactive outdoor adventure to learn all about different aspects of nature around Deception Pass State Park. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Location: Amphitheater, Deception Pass State Park

Vehicle access to the amphitheater may be limited due to winter storm damage. For more information and updates on the closure, please visit the West Beach Parking Area Damage project page.  

If parking is unavailable, the amphitheater can be accessed by walking from the Cranberry Lake campground or East Cranberry parking lot. To request an accessible option, please contact park staff at DeceptionPass.Interpreter@parks.wa.gov. Requests must be made 24 hours in advance.

  • From HWY 20 enter the main park entrance. This entrance is located south of the bridge on Whidbey Island. 
  • Follow the road and take the second left to park at the East Cranberry parking lot. 
  • From East Cranberry parking lot, it is a one mile walk to the amphitheater. 

Campers are invited to walk directly from their campsite. The amphitheater is located between the Cranberry Lake Campground and West Beach.

Ranger Hour - Build a Bird

Washington State Parks is returning to the Oak Harbor Library for the third year for a fun program series called Ranger Hour!

Join staff from Deception Pass State Park once a month to learn about parks, wildlife, native plants, and more! Play games, be creative, and discover the natural world in our own community. All ages welcome. Adult caretakers must be present for the duration of the entire program. Programs are scheduled for 60 minutes.

Guided Hike: Tales of the Old Growth - Deception Pass

Giant Douglas Firs and towering Western Red Cedars fill the old growth forests of Hoypus point. Join staff on Saturday afternoons in February to discover the fascinating history of Hoypus point and the importance of old-growth forests throughout time. This hike is just over 2 miles round trip with a 230ft elevation gain. Surfaces include an old road and dirt trail. The hike is expected to take 1.5 hours with a 15-minute return walk back to the parking lot. This hike is not stroller accessible or ADA.
