Drop by the West Beach Shelter to look through telescopes as the Island County Astronomical Society members share the night sky.

Night sky viewing will be hosted by Island County Astronomical Society members from 9:30 to 11 p.m. near the West Beach Shelter. Children must be attended by an adult.

Location: West Beach Shelter, Deception Pass State Park

Vehicle access to West Bach may be limited due to winter storm damage. For more information and updates on the closure, please visit the West Beach Parking Area Damage project page.  

The West Beach can be accessed by walking from the Cranberry Lake campground or East Cranberry parking lot. To request an accessible option, please contact park staff at DeceptionPass.Interpreter@parks.wa.gov. Requests must be made 24 hours in advance.

  • From HWY 20 enter the main park entrance. This entrance is located south of the bridge on Whidbey Island. 
  • Follow the road and take the second left to park at the East Cranberry parking lot. 
  • From East Cranberry parking lot, it is a one mile walk to West Beach. The shelter is located near the swim area and restrooms. 

Campers are invited to walk directly from their campsite.

Guided Hike: Marvelous Marine Mammals - Deception Pass

From elephant seals to porpoises, orcas, and whales, Deception Pass State Park is a marvel for marine mammal viewing. Join staff for a guided hike at Rosario on Saturday afternoons in March to discover the wonders of marine mammals at Deception Pass. This hike is roughly 0.5 miles with a 100ft elevation gain. The hike is expected to take 1 hour. This hike is not stroller accessible or ADA.

Family in Nature - Deception Pass

Family in Nature is a fun and highly interactive, nature-based program designed for children ages 2 to 5 years old. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes and focuses on various aspects of nature found in the park. The programs include story time, creative play, parent-led activities and crafts. Our goal is to create a warm and welcoming space where you and your little ones can enjoy the wonders of Deception Pass together.
