Deception Pass First Day Hike

There are currently no future events scheduled.
First day hikers are welcome to the Cornet Bay Retreat Center at Deception Pass State Park for a fun morning of hikes. Starting at 9:00 AM, hikers are invited to enjoy warm drinks and snacks. At 9:30 AM hikers will then have the option select their preferred activity based on difficulty level. Hikes range in difficulty from easy to hard. All hikes are on and around Goose Rock and include some of the most popular trails in the park. Hikers can expect to see a variety of wildlife, experience old growth forest, and enjoy amazing views of the Salish Sea and rocky cliffs of Deception Pass.

Event Schedule

9:00 AM - Warm drinks and snacks available

9:30 AM - Welcome

9:45 AM - Hikes leave the Cornet Bay Retreat Center

11:00 AM to 12:00 PM - Hikes return to Cornet Bay Retreat Center

Discovery Trail Hike (Easy, 1.1 miles and 204ft)

Goose Rock Perimeter Hike (Medium, 2.25 miles and 515ft)

Goose Rock Summit Hike (Hard, 2.30 miles and 765ft)

Family Hike (pre-registration required)

Continue past the Quarry Pond Campground along Cornet Bay Rd. The Retreat Center is the very next left, there is a sign on the entrance to the road, but it can be difficult to see. If you have not been to the Retreat Center before we do encourage leaving early, since it can be difficult to find. The parking lot at the Retreat Center is small, carpooling is encouraged. Guided Hike: Tales of the Old Growth - Deception Pass

Giant Douglas Firs and towering Western Red Cedars fill the old growth forests of Hoypus point. Join staff on Saturday afternoons in February to discover the fascinating history of Hoypus point and the importance of old-growth forests throughout time. This hike is just over 2 miles round trip with a 230ft elevation gain. Surfaces include an old road and dirt trail. The hike is expected to take 1.5 hours with a 15-minute return walk back to the parking lot. This hike is not stroller accessible or ADA.

Family in Nature - Deception Pass

Family in Nature is a fun and highly interactive, nature-based program designed for children ages 2 to 5 years old. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes and focuses on various aspects of nature found in the park. The programs include story time, creative play, parent-led activities and crafts. Our goal is to create a warm and welcoming space where you and your little ones can enjoy the wonders of Deception Pass together.
