Bird Walk - Deception Pass

Discover some of the common, and not so common, species of birds which call Deception Pass State Park home.

Bird Walks are designed as a great opportunity for birders of all levels. Practice bird identification skills, explore unique bird habitats, and learn from other birders. We recommend bringing your own binoculars and/or scopes, but we will have a few on hand to borrow. All walks are offered in partnership with the Whidbey Audubon Society.

Use the address listed above to navigate to the park. Please note this address will only take you to the general location of the park. Whether arriving from the north or south on SR20, you will come to a stoplight at the bottom of a hill. Turn west into the main park entrance. Drive past the welcome station and follow along the winding road until you reach a stop sign, then turn left. Take this road all the way down to the end, which will lead you to the West Beach parking lot. Restrooms are available at this location.

Ranger Hour - Build a Bird

Washington State Parks is returning to the Oak Harbor Library for the third year for a fun program series called Ranger Hour!

Join staff from Deception Pass State Park once a month to learn about parks, wildlife, native plants, and more! Play games, be creative, and discover the natural world in our own community. All ages welcome. Adult caretakers must be present for the duration of the entire program. Programs are scheduled for 60 minutes.

Guided Hike: Tales of the Old Growth - Deception Pass

Giant Douglas Firs and towering Western Red Cedars fill the old growth forests of Hoypus point. Join staff on Saturday afternoons in February to discover the fascinating history of Hoypus point and the importance of old-growth forests throughout time. This hike is just over 2 miles round trip with a 230ft elevation gain. Surfaces include an old road and dirt trail. The hike is expected to take 1.5 hours with a 15-minute return walk back to the parking lot. This hike is not stroller accessible or ADA.

Family in Nature - Deception Pass

Family in Nature is a fun and highly interactive, nature-based program designed for children ages 2 to 5 years old. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes and focuses on various aspects of nature found in the park. The programs include story time, creative play, parent-led activities and crafts. Our goal is to create a warm and welcoming space where you and your little ones can enjoy the wonders of Deception Pass together.
