Washington State Parks Folk & Traditional Arts Program and Arbutus Folk School present:

Join guest artist Mapathé Diop for a free workshop to learn about and enjoy traditional drumming of Senegal. Drumming has a long history in West Africa, including the role of the griot, a traditional historian who uses the drums both to entertain and to communicate. Participants will learn about the importance of this musical tradition and enjoy performances as well as a chance to try playing the drums themselves. You will learn about Senegalese rhythms such as Wolof, Serer, Lebou, Laubé and Walo, not only the rhythms but their cultural context. Open to all ages and skill levels. Those who have their own drum to bring along are welcome to do so. This is a fun opportunity to learn more about West African culture while enjoying views of Tolmie State Park!
