Experienced paragliders and hang gliders who have their own gear can take off from a few state parks. Columbia Hills, Fort Ebey, Fort Flagler and Steptoe Butte welcome paragliders; while hang gliding is only allowed at Steptoe Butte.

SPOKANE — Washington State Parks invites community members to help shape the next 20 years of Mount Spokane State Park by attending a public meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Shadle Park Library.

At this meeting, park planners will share the draft Preferred Alternative for the park’s Master Plan, which outlines a long-term vision for Mount Spokane. The draft includes a list of prioritized improvement projects, land classifications and long-term boundary recommendations — all aimed at enhancing the visitor experience for the next 20 years.

On June 23, State Parks lowered the level of Lake Sylvia approximately five feet to relieve pressure on the Lake Sylvia dam.

The Lake Sylvia dam, which was built around 1918, is showing signs of age and requires maintenance work. Lowering the level of the lake relieves pressure on the dam, ensures visitor safety and allows State Parks and its partners to continuing monitoring the structure while preparing for next steps.

State parks have a wide variety of natural native and planted non-native trees and forests, which makes them at risk for almost every worrisome invasive pest. Parks are of particular concern because they have visitors from all over the state and country who often bring their own camping supplies for their stay. This includes the main culprit for invasive pest transfer: firewood.

OLYMPIA – Nov. 22, 2022 – Washington State Parks will hold an in-person open house to update the public on the progress and status of ongoing master planning efforts at Westport Light State Park to consider a Scottish-style links golf course.

The presentation will provide a summary of findings of the environmental and economic site analysis conducted, introduce the golf course conceptual design and discuss next steps in the planning process.
