The Early Bird Hike at Northrup Canyon - Steamboat Rock State Park
The hike up Northrup Canyon will give you an opportunity to learn about the birds and wildlife that inhabit the only forest in Grant County.
Don't forget to bring your binoculars to see eagles roosting in the trees.
Prepare to be awe-struck by the natural beauty of Northrup Canyon, a geological wonder sculpted by the powerful forces of ice age floods. The entire basin was once a glacial lake, and as you explore further, you'll encounter smaller hills of granite bedrock. The rounded uphill sides and steep downhill cliffs of these unique formations are a testament to the colossal power of glaciers that plucked away massive blocks of rock, leaving behind these impressive features that tell a story of the Earth's tumultuous past.
Be prepared for light patches of snow on the trail and cooler temperatures.
YakTrax (traction cleats), hiking poles, and a thermos of hot chocolate, coffee, or tea, will make your adventure more enjoyable!
