OLYMPIA – Aug. 4, 2016 – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and partners invite the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the extension of the Spokane River Centennial Trail. The event begins at 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 15, at Nine Mile Recreation Area, 11226, W. Charles Rd., Nine Mile Falls. (Directions:

Parks staff and partners will be on hand to talk about trail improvements starting later this summer and other priority projects. The event celebrates the completion of the northwest extension of the Centennial Trail, which extends approximately 2 miles from Sontag Community Park to Nine Mile Recreation Area on Lake Spokane. The completed trail section provides additional access to the Centennial Trail and is an important link for this northeast Washington community. The nearly 40-mile Centennial Trail runs between the Washington-Idaho state line and Nine Mile Falls and follows the contours of the Spokane River. The trail provides recreational opportunities for many types of non-motorized users and access to the water at key points along the trail. The Spokane River Centennial Trail connects with the North Idaho Centennial Trail. Together, the trails span more than 60 miles and connect the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene communities. Funding for this project was provided by Friends of the Centennial Trail, Avista Corp. and Washington State Parks through a grant program from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office. The name “Centennial” refers to the trail’s initial construction period, which occurred soon after the Washington State Centennial in 1989.For questions about the celebration, contact Lara Gricar, Riverside State Park Program Specialist,
