State Parks announces public meeting to discuss future of Bridgeport State Park

OLYMPIA – March 10, 2014 – Washington State Parks announces a public meeting this week to discuss lease renewal for property at Bridgeport State Park in Douglas County.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission currently leases 283 acres of land in the park from the United States Army Corps of Engineers; State Parks owns 340 additional acres adjacent to the leased area. The Commission’s lease from the Army Corps of Engineers expires on Sept. 30, 2015, and State Parks is considering whether to apply for a new lease.

A public meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in the Council Chambers of the Bridgeport Municipal Building, 1206 Columbia Ave., Bridgeport. The meeting will provide an opportunity for public comment on the lease and on the future of Bridgeport State Park. The Commission will consider public input gathered at the meeting in making a decision about whether to apply for a new lease.

Bridgeport State Park is a camping and day-use park on Rufus Woods Lake near the Chief Joseph Dam. The park provides 18 acres of lawns and shade in a desert terrain that also features unusual volcanic formations known as “haystacks.” The park is popular for swimming, boating and fishing during the warm months and is closed between October and April each year.
