OLYMPIA – Oct. 2, 2015 – The Washington State Parks’ Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks Program invites the public to a family dance at Cama Beach State Park on Camano Island.
The free family-friendly event is from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17, at the Cama Center at Cama Beach State Park, 1880 SW Camano Drive, Camano Island. (Directions: https://goo.gl/maps/VyADcG2N19F2)
Members of two local bands, Squirrel Butter and Peckin’ Out Dough, will combine forces to provide live music with fiddles, banjos and guitars. The performers will also give dance instruction for beginning and experienced participants.
Fresh from a recent guest spot on National Public Radio’s “Prairie Home Companion,” the duo Squirrel Butter performs traditional and original music influenced by Appalachian, early country, jug band and blues artists from the late 1800s through the 1950s. Charlie Beck is a virtuoso on the banjo, fiddle and steel guitar; Charmaine Slaven plays fiddle and guitar and will call the dances—a mixture of circle, square and line dances.
Joining Squirrel Butter will be two members of Peckin' Out Dough, a square dance band that hails from Seattle featuring guitarist Catherine Alexander and fiddler Tony Mates.
There is no charge to attend this dance. A Discover Pass is required for parking at Cama Beach. All concerts are accessible to persons with disabilities. For special accommodations, please call the park at (360) 387-1550 or the Washington Telecommunications Relay Service (800) 833-6388. Requests must be made in advance.
