In the homelands of the Nez Perce people, the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake rivers was a major milestone for the Corps of Discovery's passage through the Northwest. The corps continued down the waters that would lead them to the Columbia River and ultimately to their long-anticipated goal - the Pacific Ocean.
On Oct. 16, they made their first of many stops at a site that would some day become a Washington state park.
The park - Sacajawea State Park - is named for the Shoshoni Indian woman traveling with the corps.
