Possession Point State Park closes for construction project

OLYMPIA – Jul. 21, 2011 – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announces the weekday closure of Possession Point State Park on Whidbey Island, to replace the seawall beginning July 18. The park will be open 6 a.m. to dusk Saturdays and Sundays during construction.

The project will include removing the plank bulkhead and replacing it with a buried rock trench to allow better long-shore transport of beach materials for improved salmonid habitat. Work is expected to take 60 to 90 days for completion.

The project will cost approximately $400,000 and is funded by a FEMA Disaster Assistance Grant. Please note: This closure does not affect the Possession Point Waterfront Park and Boat Launch, which are owned and operated by the Port of South Whidbey.

Possession Point State Park is a marine park located on the southern tip of Whidbey Island and is part of the Cascadia Marine Trail. There is one water trail campsite available first come, first served, at the north end of the park, and it is open only to those arriving by wind- or human-powered watercraft only.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission thanks the public for supporting state parks. The Commission manages a diverse system of more than 100 state parks and recreation programs, including long-distance trails, boating safety and winter recreation. The 98-year-old park system will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2013.
