Pearrygin Lake State Park plays host to a kids’ fishing derby

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission invites the public to attend a kids’ fishing derby at Pearrygin Lake State Park, near Winthrop.
The event begins 8:30 a.m. April 28 at the east boat launch of Pearrygin Lake State Park, 561 Bear Creek Road, Winthrop. Children ages 14 years and younger are welcome to fish Pearrygin Lake for a chance to win in one of the many derby categories, including most fish by weight and largest fish. Event coordinators will be present at 8 a.m., however, children may begin fishing at dawn. Prizes are awarded to category winners by age group and will be awarded shortly after 12 p.m. Hot dogs, drinks and coffee are free to event participants.
The kids’ fishing derby at Pearrygin Lake State Park is an annual event sponsored by the Twisp Eagles.
Cama Beach State Park of Camano Island and Lake Sylvia State Park in Montesano also offer kids’ fishing derbies in 2012. The fishing derbies for these parks are both scheduled for June 9—a State Parks free access day. A Discover Pass is not required to access Washington state parks on State Parks free days. A Discover Pass is still required on Washington State Department of Natural Resources and Department of Fish and Wildlife lands. Pearrygin Lake State Park is a camping park in the Methow Valley in north central Washington. The park features expansive green lawns leading to 11,000 feet of waterfront on Pearrygin Lake. The park opened in 1964 as a state park recreation area. In 2004, 94 acres, including a store, hayfield and the west campground were added to the park. The lake offers swimming, fishing and boating and the park is well-known for viewings of marmots, red-winged and yellow-headed blackbirds and other wildlife.
