Washington State Parks is kicking off its 100th birthday
celebration with events across Washington state. All events are free unless otherwise noted.
Washington state parks are filled with rich historical and cultural places, along
with some of the most beautiful natural areas in the Northwest. Many parks offer a
variety of educational opportunities for visitors to learn more about the culture,
history and nature of the park and surrounding areas. Visitors may enjoy a campfire
program, attend a junior ranger activity, explore a museum and experience a living-history
presentation.

Washington state parks play host to a variety of unique events that connect
communities to their state parks. Dance to music by a lake, explore festival booths,
celebrate the birthdays of historic locations, soak in local art, gaze at stars or
sing by the sea at a state park event. Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks Program
events, presented in cooperation with the Washington State Arts Commission, celebrate
the rich heritage and culture found in Washington state.

LeRoy’s Park Geocache: Experienced geocachers may search for a multi-cache at Cama Beach State Park. The multi-cache highlights the history of the area, including the popular 1930’s Puget Sound resort that was later transformed into a state park and the 1905 logging camp. Ugryumov Oil Painting Exhibit: Landscape oil paintings by post-impressionist artist, Gennady Ugryumov, are on display at Dry Falls Visitor Center throughout 2012. The painting series on canvas feature Ugryumov’s interpretation of the Columbia River and Columbia Plateau region, aptly called the Big River series. The exhibit includes 20 individual landscape pieces and the three-piece mural, "Children of the Big River," inspired by Ugryumov’s July 2010 visit to the Colville Confederated Tribes’ annual powwow ceremony. Tours of North Head Lighthouse: Join trained volunteers on a tour of the North Head Lighthouse. Climb the spiral staircase up to the lantern room and enjoy the view while learning about the Graveyard of the Pacific. Participants must be 7 years old to tour the lantern room. Native Plant Appreciation Week - Deception Pass: To celebrate the diversity of native plants in the Pacific Northwest, the Washington Native Plant Society (WNPS) invites everyone to Native Plant Appreciate Week events across the state. Native Plant Appreciation Week - Columbia Hills: To celebrate the diversity of native plants in the Pacific Northwest, the Washington Native Plant Society (WNPS) invites everyone to Native Plant Appreciate Week events across the state. Take guided hikes highlighting local wildflowers, animals, geology and history at Dalles Mountain Ranch and Horsethief Butte of Columbia Hills State Park during "The Dalles Mountain Trail Daze." Native Plant Appreciation Week - Olallie: To celebrate the diversity of native plants in the Pacific Northwest, the Washington Native Plant Society (WNPS) invites everyone to Native Plant Appreciate Week events across the state. The Central Puget Sound Chapter of the WNPS plays host to a three-mile walk along the trail to Twin Falls at Olallie State Park, following the north fork of the Snoqualmie River. View the diverse selection of understory wildflowers found at the park and in the mist of the waterfall. It is suggested participants take along a picnic lunch and rain gear, if the weather is wet. Mother’s Day Sail: Hitch a ride on a powerboat livery boat out to a larger vessel day to sail along Saratoga Passage. Northwest Paddling Festival: For a second year, the festival dedicated to paddle sports and activities returns to Sunset Beach at Lake Sammamish State Park. The festival features kayak tours, paddling and flare demonstrations, low impact campsite lessons, onshore and kids’ activities, a gear swap and more. Paddlers may register for the Northwest Paddling Challenge race during the event, open to kayakers, stand up paddleboarders and outriggers. Industry vendors booths will be on site during the event. Trippin’ with the Triploids: Entry the fishing tournament on Rufus Woods Lake at Bridgeport State Park. Derby tickets are $50 per person, which includes entry into the tournament, an event t-shirt and a barbecue dinner during the awards presentation at the Willow Flats boat launch. Anglers may fish by boat or on shore. Divisions for youth and adults are offered. Native American Storytelling at Fort Ebey: Visit Fort Ebey State Park for a special presentation on Native American storytelling by internationally-acclaimed storyteller, Louis LamBombard. LamBombard will tell stories from Native American oral traditions, including the Northwest Coastal groups. A member of the Seneca Nation, LamBombard is a professor of anthropology at Skagit Valley College. This presentation is the opening event for Penn Cove Water Festival. North Head Lighthouse Anniversary: Celebrate the 114th anniversary of the North Head Lighthouse at Cape Disappointment State Park. Take a self-guided journey through the Lighthouse Keeper’s Residence, listen to lighthouse memories, dance to music by the Ilwaco High School Jazz Band and enjoy refreshments as part of the annual anniversary celebration. Issaquah Triathlon: The 2012 Issaquah Triathlon offers a sprint distance triathlon, duathlon and races for athletes of all experience levels, including a kids’ triathlon. The entire family can register to join the fun or visit vendors, eat food and watch participants race through the park. The course is first-time triathlete friendly, with volunteers along the path. Events offered include:
Sprint triathlon: a quarter-mile swim, 15-mile bike and three-mile run

Discover Outer Space from Goldendale - a Centennial 2013 event: View the transit of Venus across the sun at Goldendale Observatory State Park. Live video images from the observatory’s solar telescope will be displayed on a large screen monitor in the interpretive center theater. As time passes, visitors will see the black dot of the planet Venus as it crosses the face of the sun. This celestial event is so rare, it will not occur again until December 2117 - four years after the State Parks bicentennial.

Tastin’ n Racin’: For the past 16 years, the Tastin’ n Racin’ festival has brought Northwest limited hydroplane racing, live music and food vendors to Lake Sammamish. A wide variety of hydroplanes will race during the festival, including 1.5-litre, 2.5-litre, 2.5-mod, 5-litre, national modified, Grand Prix and vintage hydroplanes, plus superstock, prostock and runabout boats. Unlimited hydroplanes from the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum will at the event for demonstrations on the lake. Onshore activities include the Hot Boat Show on Saturday and the Classic Car Show on Sunday. A beer garden for adults and activities for children also are offered. Sacajawea Bluegrass Festival and Dutch Oven Rendezvous: Everyone is welcome to the annual bluegrass festival and Dutch Oven Rendezvous at Sacajawea State Park. Live concerts from bluegrass musicians play all weekend. Learn how to cook using cast iron Dutch ovens by watching demonstrations and glean new recipe ideas from seasoned cooks. Tickets are required for all concert and Dutch oven activities on Friday and Saturday. Camping is allowed for ticket holders. Admission to concerts on Sunday are free.

Pearrygin Lake Bike Rodeo: Take along the kids to learn about bike riding safety at Pearrygin Lake State Park. The annual bike rodeo is open to all children, ages 5 to 12. Children may test their maneuvering skills, practice skills in effective riding, learn about riding in traffic, get fitted for a helmet and have their bicycles inspected for free. Discover Health and Adventure - Deception Pass Challenge - a Centennial 2013 event: Ever tried running to the top of Goose Rock? Ever biked Discover Trail and through the back trails of Hoyus Hill? Ever swam across Cranberry Lake? Take the challenge to do all three in one morning at Deception Pass State Park. The first 100 participants to sign up will face the daunting 800 meter swim in Cranberry Lake, 12-mile bike ride out to Hoyus Hill and back and then will run from North Beach, up Goose Rock and back to the West Beach. Dirty Dash: For a second year, the Dirty Dash mud-run obstacle course returns to Riverside State Park equestrian area. The four and a half mile course includes wall climbs, mud hills, pipe crawls, giant slip ‘n’ slides, cargo nets, root beer chug and more muddy obstacles. Registration fees apply.
This year, participants may donate 20 percent of their registration fee to the Riverside State Park Foundation by using promo code RIVERSIDE during registration. Bellingham Trail Running Series - Fragrance Lake 10K & 20K: Join the race up Chuckanut Mountain and past Fragrance Lake at Larrabee State Park. The single track course begins at sea level and climbs to the top of Chuckanut Mountain. The 10K race descends on the Fragrance Lake Trail after a trek up the mountain. The 20K course takes runners up Chuckanut Ridge, through challenging trails and veers back to Fragrance Lake Trail. Both courses finish at the south day-use area.
All runners must check in at the south day-use area between 8 and 9:45 a.m. Registration fee required for participation. Day of race registration is available.
