Centennial 2013

Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission celebrates 100 years and prepares for a second century

In 2003, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission constructed a plan to prepare for the state park system's 100th birthday in 2013 and a second century of service to citizens. To guide preparations, the Commission adopted the Centennial 2013 Vision:

"In 2013, Washington's state parks will be premier destinations of uncommon quality, including state and regionally significant natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources that are outstanding for the experience, health, enjoyment and learning of all people."

The Centennial 2013 Plan is intended to focus agency staff, citizen volunteers, organizations and state policy-makers on a common goal. The plan includes three priorities and a call to action to citizens:

Our Commitment Take care of what we have, with help from the Governor and Legislature.

  • Priority 1 Care for the parks and recreation services enjoyed by the public today in the six core areas of stewardship; enjoyment, health and learning; public service; facilities; partnerships; and a financial strategy that leverages increased general tax support with earned revenue and donations for operations.

Your Legacy Add new things: Meet the demands of a rapidly growing state and prepare for the future, with a blend of public and private funding:

  • Priority 2 Expand existing parks, trails and services
  • Priority 3 Add new parks, trails and services

100 Connections A call to action to citizens to donate funds, materials and labor to complete one of 100 projects in parks around the state. Projects include a range of improvements, from playgrounds to trails to interpretive installations.

The Legislature and two governors have endorsed the plan, and the 2005-07 capital budget provides starting funds to develop Centennial 2013 Plan projects. Centennial 2013 news is posted on this page, along with a Centennial goals and progress report.

You are invited to complete an online endorsement or send an e-mail to the Commission giving your support for the plan or the portions of the plan that most interest you. Your group also may choose to adopt one of the 100 Connections projects outlined in the plan.

Let's get your state parks ready for a grand birthday and generations of new visitors to come.
